Mapping groundwater recharge in Africa from ground observations and implications for water security

چکیده
Abstract Groundwater forms the basis of water supplies across much Africa and its development is rising as demand for secure increases. Recharge rates are a key component assessing groundwater potential, but have not been mapped Africa, other than from global models. Here we quantify long-term average (LTA) distributed recharge period 1970–2019 134 ground-based estimates upscaled statistically. Natural diffuse local focussed recharge, where this mechanism widespread, included discrete leakage large rivers, lakes or irrigation excluded. We find that measurable LTA found in most environments with decadal depths arid semi-arid areas 60 mm (30–140 mm) 200 (90–430 respectively. A linear mixed model shows at scale African continent only rainfall related to recharge—the inclusion climate terrestrial factors do improve model. Kriging methods indicate spatial dependency 900 km suggesting important scales. estimate 15 000 3 (4900–45 ), approximately 2% estimated storage continent, characterised by stark variability between high-storage/low-recharge sedimentary aquifers North low-storage/high-recharge weathered crystalline-rock tropical Africa. security greatly enhanced distribution, many countries low possess substantial storage, whereas experience high, regular recharge. The dataset provides first, approximation renewability can be used refine validate continental hydrological models while also providing baseline against future change.

Late Noachian “icy Highlands” Mars: Implications for Melting and Ground- Water Recharge across the Tharsis Rise
Introduction: Results from modeling of an early CO2 martian atmosphere and late Noachian climate predict that at pressures greater than a fraction of a bar, atmosphere-surface thermal coupling occurs, resulting in adiabatic cooling of high areas across Mars [1]. This effect promotes the transport of water from warmer low-lying areas to the highlands where deposition and accumulation of water ic...
متن کاملGroundwater modeling for estimation of the recharge rate and identification of appropriate recharge sites in Damghan Plain, Iran
Water is the main option of any development, so having an accurate management of groundwater is necessary. This study has been done in Damghan sedimentary plain in Iran, which is located in northwest of Semnan Province. The main objective of this research was to estimate the rate and right site of recharge in Damghan plain to prevent the aquifer from decreasing the water table. For this purpose...
متن کاملRegional estimation of total recharge to ground water in Nebraska.
Naturally occurring long-term mean annual recharge to ground water in Nebraska was estimated by a novel water-balance approach. This approach uses geographic information systems (GIS) layers of land cover, elevation of land and ground water surfaces, base recharge, and the recharge potential in combination with monthly climatic data. Long-term mean recharge > 140 mm per year was estimated in ea...
متن کاملsimulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water
abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...
A regression model to estimate regional ground water recharge.
A regional regression model was developed to estimate the spatial distribution of ground water recharge in subhumid regions. The regional regression recharge (RRR) model was based on a regression of basin-wide estimates of recharge from surface water drainage basins, precipitation, growing degree days (GDD), and average basin specific yield (SY). Decadal average recharge, precipitation, and GDD...
